When to swim with manatees

On a cold January morning hundreds of manatees pack into the springs of Kings Bay, steam rising off the water around them. Come in July and you may share the bay with two or three. The month you pick decides almost everything.

Florida manatees cannot handle cold water. When the Gulf drops below about 68°F, they head for warm springs, and the springs of Kings Bay stay close to 72°F (22°C) all year. Crystal River holds one of the biggest winter gatherings in Florida as a result.

Tours run every month of the year. Here is how the season works, what a cold front does, which hour to book, and when a summer trip still makes sense.

The quick answer

Go between mid-December and February, on the morning after a cold front, on the first tour of the day. Manatee season runs from 15 November to 31 March, and on the coldest mornings of late December 2025 and January 2026 about 300 manatees crowded into Three Sisters Springs. In summer most animals leave for the river and the Gulf, and guests report one to three on a tour. The River Ventures tour ($76) runs all year.

What is the best month to swim with manatees in Crystal River?

January, with December and February close behind. Those are the coldest months, and the manatee count in Kings Bay peaks.

The animals arrive with the cold, not with the calendar. A mild December can feel thin; a sharp cold snap in late November can fill the springs early. March is a gamble. One Orlando day-trip guest who went in late March 2026 advised: "If you are hoping to see more manatees go earlier in the season."

When is manatee season in Crystal River?

From 15 November to 31 March. During those months the refuge puts seven warm-water manatee sanctuaries in force, roped areas closed to all people.

The dates come from the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, which runs ranger programs daily at Three Sisters Springs in season. Inside the sanctuaries the manatees rest undisturbed. You swim and watch from the open water around them, and on a cold day the animals move in and out across the ropes.

Why do cold fronts bring more manatees?

Cold air chills the bay and the Gulf, so manatees pile into the springs to keep warm. The first morning after a front is the best of the year.

On New Year's Eve 2025, and again in mid-January 2026, about 300 manatees gathered at Three Sisters Springs on cold mornings, local news reported. Kayak guest Jean, January 2026, "Saw a lot of manatees (cold front came through)".

Watch the forecast. When the low drops into the 30s or 40s °F overnight, book the next morning. You will be cold on the boat and warm in the water.

What time of day is best to see manatees?

Early morning. Manatees rest in the warm springs through cold nights, then many drift out into the bay to feed as the day warms.

The first departures, usually around sunrise, get the calm water and the resting animals. The water is often clearer before boats stir up the bay. Afternoon tours still find manatees in winter, just more spread out. In summer the time matters less, because the animals are already scattered.

Can you swim with manatees in summer?

Yes, and tours run all year. Expect one to three manatees instead of dozens, a longer search and murkier water in the bay.

Laurie, on River Ventures in September 2026: "Saw 2 manatees. This is the off season. Still found two." Ty, on Gulf Coast Expeditions in July, wrote that the captain "was great at finding manatees even during the warm months".

Summer has its own upside. From 1 April to 14 November paddlers can go into Three Sisters Springs, and swim tours spend time in the clear spring water, with or without a manatee. The boardwalk ticket is cheaper too. Details are in the Three Sisters guide.

How do the months compare?

December to February is prime time, March and November are mixed, April to October is the quiet season.

Counts are rough and depend on the weather each year.

What happens on the coldest days?

Tours still run. On very cold days or when numbers spike, the refuge may close Three Sisters Springs to swimmers, and your guide finds manatees elsewhere in the bay.

The refuge closed the springs to people for six days in a row in January 2024 because of the crowding. The boardwalk stays open, and the bay around it holds plenty of animals. The springs hold steady near 72°F, so the water feels warm next to a 40°F morning, and the wetsuit does the rest. Get a tour with hot drinks and a covered boat.

Tabitha, on the clear kayak tour in January 2026: "Despite the super cold weather, and limited sun, we still saw manatees!"

When is the Florida Manatee Festival?

On the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in mid-January. The 2026 edition ran on 17 and 18 January in downtown Crystal River.

The Citrus County Chamber of Commerce runs it in the town centre, and Florida Rambler lists it among the January manatee festivals each year. It packs the town, so book the tour and the room weeks ahead or pick the weekend after. Prices and booking tips are in the tours and prices guide.
