Swimming with manatees with kids

A five-year-old in a tiny wetsuit, clutching a pool noodle, face down over a manatee the size of a sofa. Children love this trip. Most tours take them from age 3, and the hardest part is often getting them out of the water.

Kings Bay is a calm, shallow place to swim, the water stays near 72°F all year, and the wetsuit floats you without effort. Manatees are gentle and slow. That makes a manatee swim one of the easiest wildlife trips in Florida for a family.

The details still matter: which tours take small children, what they wear, how to keep them warm on a winter morning, and what to do if one of them refuses to get in.

The quick answer

Yes, kids can swim with manatees in Crystal River. Fun 2 Dive and River Ventures take children from age 3, and Gulf Coast Expeditions ($79) has a child rate for ages 3 to 10 on a six-guest boat with hot cocoa. Every tour provides wetsuits, and noodles keep small swimmers afloat. For kids who want to stay dry, the clear kayak tour has a child rate for ages 3 to 11.

Can kids swim with manatees in Crystal River?

Yes. Most swim tours take children from age 3, with a parent in the group. The water is shallow and calm, and an in-water guide stays with you.

Children float in a wetsuit with a noodle under the arms, face in the water, breathing through a snorkel. That last part takes a few minutes to learn. Practise with the mask in the bath or a pool before the trip, and the first minutes on the day go much easier.

Danielle, on Gulf Coast Expeditions in October 2026, said the crew "made sure us and the manatees were both safe and comfortable."

Want a small boat with a child rate? Gulf Coast Expeditions takes six guests at most, ages 3 to 10 at the child price.

What is the minimum age for each manatee tour?

Three on most swims and on the kayak tour. The viewing cruise takes under-3s on private charters only; the private swim takes all ages, infants on laps.

Ages as listed on Viator in November 2026. Where a tour shows no child rate, children pay the adult price.

Is swimming with manatees safe for children?

Yes. Manatees are gentle plant-eaters, the bay is shallow and calm, the wetsuit and noodle keep kids afloat, and a guide is in the water with them.

Nobody dives and nobody swims far from the boat. Children hold a noodle and float. Guides keep an eye on the smallest swimmers and bring them back to the ladder when they have had enough. Shana, on the Salty Siren tour in April 2026: "Our group was more than half children (ages 7-10) and the staff were great with the kids and with people of different ability levels."

Do manatee tours have wetsuits for kids?

Yes. Every swim tour includes a wetsuit, and River Ventures stocks sizes from toddlers, 2 years old and up.

The wetsuit does three jobs: it keeps them warm, it floats them, and it covers skin so you need very little sunscreen. Pack a swimsuit to wear underneath, a towel, dry clothes and a warm hoodie for the boat. Crocs or sandals are easier than trainers on a wet deck.

Only the Orlando day trip makes you hire wetsuits separately, so add that to the bill for each child.

Will kids get cold swimming with manatees?

In winter, often, once they are out of the water. The springs stay near 72°F, but the air can be in the 40s °F at dawn, so pick a covered or heated boat.

Children chill faster than adults. Give them a warm layer the moment they climb out, and something hot to drink. Gulf Coast Expeditions serves hot cocoa; Salty Siren runs an enclosed, heated pontoon; the private swim uses a heated boat. Angela, on the private swim in January 2026: "The heated boat felt great after getting out of the water as well as the hot chocolate."

If your kids feel the cold badly, a mild day in March or the warm months is kinder, with fewer manatees. See the best time guide.

Children float back and watch; the manatees do the rest.

What if your child does not want to get in?

Let them watch from the boat. On a small or private boat the captain stays with them, and many kids change their minds after ten minutes.

Katherine, on the private swim in December 2024: "Our 4 year old initially opted not to join the swimming and he was comfortable with Captain Todd." Later the guide got him into the water, and he saw the manatees after all.

For kids who would rather stay dry from the start, the clear kayak tour lets them watch through the hull with a life jacket on, and the viewing cruise looks for manatees from the deck.

Want the boat to yourselves? The private swim takes all ages, and the captain stays aboard with anyone who stays dry.

Which manatee tour is best for families?

A six-guest boat for most families, or the private swim for a family of four to six. Both give the guide time for nervous kids.

Gulf Coast Expeditions has the child rate and a boat of six. The private swim costs $500 for up to six, about $83 each when full, and one guest wrote that the enclosed boat "was also great for our infant who traveled with us." The Salty Siren tour adds a heated cabin, and its guests praise how the crew handles children.

What else can kids do near Crystal River?

Walk the Three Sisters Springs boardwalk, where children 5 and under pay nothing, or watch manatees through glass at Homosassa Springs.

Children 6 to 15 pay $7.50 at Three Sisters in any season; details are in the Three Sisters guide. Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, about 15 minutes south, has an underwater observatory, and adults pay $13. The Orlando day trip includes both the swim and the park; read the Orlando and Tampa guide. Jasmine, on that day trip in November 2025: "Amazing experience for our family from Grandma to our 6yo."
