Booking choice: The day trip from Orlando, from $169 per person. Check dates Compare the options below
Orlando has the theme parks and the airport, but no manatee swims. You can watch manatees closer to the city in winter. Swimming beside them, legally, means a trip to Crystal River on the Gulf Coast.
Here are the routes and drive times from Orlando and Tampa, how the day trip from Orlando works, and the spots nearby people confuse with Crystal River.
The quick answer
Crystal River is about 90 miles from Orlando, roughly two hours by car, and about 80 miles from Tampa, an hour and a half. Without a car, the Gray Line day trip ($169, rated 4.7) picks you up around 7 am, takes you snorkeling with the manatees and spends the afternoon at Homosassa Springs. With a car, drive in early and book a morning swim from $76. Blue Spring near Orlando is for viewing, not swimming, in manatee season.

How far is Crystal River from Orlando?
About 90 miles, or roughly two hours by car without traffic.
The usual route: Florida's Turnpike north to Wildwood, then State Road 44 west through Inverness to Crystal River and US 19. The Turnpike has tolls. Leave by 5 am for a 7 am tour; after the morning rush around Orlando, the drive takes longer. Orlando International Airport (MCO) is on the far side of the city, so add time from there.
Rather not drive at 5 am? The Gray Line day trip picks you up at your Orlando hotel around 7.

About 80 miles north, an hour and a half. Take the Suncoast Parkway north into Citrus County, then US 19 or SR 44 into town.
The Suncoast Parkway (SR 589) is a toll road. Its extension reached SR 44 in Lecanto in 2022 and CR 486 in 2025, per Florida's Turnpike. The last stretch to US 19 is still being built. US 19 runs straight through town for the route without tolls, with more traffic lights. Tampa International Airport (TPA) is the closest major airport.

Drive if you have a car and want the early morning swim. Take the day trip if you have no car or would rather not drive four hours in a day.
The day trip arrives later than the first boats, and the day is long. One March 2026 guest warned: "The ride from Orlando is quite long, be prepared." Driving lets you pick the tour, the time and the group size, and see Three Sisters Springs on the way home.

Check dates for the 3-hour Fun 2 Dive manatee swimWhat is Homosassa Springs, and is it worth a stop?
A state wildlife park about 15 minutes south of Crystal River on US 19, with an underwater observatory where you watch manatees through glass.
Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park opens daily from 9 am to 5:30 pm, ticket counters close at 4:45 pm, and adults (13 and up) pay $13, per Florida State Parks. The park shows native Florida wildlife, and its manatees are easy to see in the spring on any day of the year. The park's boat shuttle was suspended in February 2026 because of low water, so check before you count on it.
Opinions split. Families with young kids enjoy it, and one Gray Line guest loved seeing the manatees fed. Another found the enclosures small and walked out. It is a good rainy-day plan, not a reason to make the drive.

Can you swim with manatees closer to Orlando?
No. Blue Spring State Park, near Orange City, is for watching manatees in winter, and its spring run closes to all water activities while they are there.
Florida State Parks closed the Blue Spring run to swimming, snorkeling, diving, tubing and paddling from 21 November 2025 for the wintering manatees. Swimming reopens in the warm months, after the manatees have left. Blue Spring is close to the city and its boardwalk view is lovely, but if you want to be in the water with them, Crystal River and Homosassa are the places.
Want to be in the water, not on a boardwalk? The River Ventures tour swims Kings Bay all winter.
Check dates for the River Ventures snorkel tourShould you stay overnight in Crystal River?
In winter, yes, if you can. The best swims leave around sunrise, and a night in town turns a 5 am drive into a short walk to the dock.
Cold mornings after a front bring the most manatees, and those are exactly the mornings you do not want on the Turnpike in the dark. Stay one night, swim at dawn, walk the Three Sisters boardwalk after lunch, then drive back to Orlando in daylight. Book the room early on the January festival weekend.

Which tour suits a day out from Orlando?
A late-morning swim if you drive in on the day, or the viewing cruise for non-swimmers. The day trip if nobody wants to drive.
Fun 2 Dive and River Ventures run several departures a day from $76, so a 10 am start fits a 7:30 departure from Orlando. The viewing cruise ($51, 90 minutes) works for grandparents who would rather watch from the deck. Prices and inclusions are compared in the tours and prices guide.

Bringing non-swimmers? The viewing cruise looks for manatees from the deck, 90 minutes with a licensed captain.
